2023 GIRLS ORONO SPARTAN CLASSIC
Tournament Rules and Regulations
- Teams are required to be present 15 minutes prior to the scheduled starting time and will be allowed five minutes for warm-up. Officials have the authority to shorten warm ups in order to keep games on schedule.
- Team line-ups must be logged in the official score book five minutes before the start of the game. Games will start early when possible. Teams will be given a 5 minute grace period if not present at the scheduled game time. Teams not ready to play with a minimum of 5 players at the end of the grace period will forfeit the game.
- Home team is listed on the top of the bracket/first in the pool and will furnish the game ball, official scoreboard monitor, and wear their dark uniform. Away team will supply official scorekeeper and wear their light uniform.
- Halves will be 14 minute stop time. Referees will call in substitutes.
- In the 2nd half, if the lead is 20 points or more, the game clock will convert to running time for the last two (2) minutes. Should the lead go below 10 points, stop time will be reinstated.
- If necessary, two overtimes will be allowed. Each overtime period will consist of one minute stop time. Thereafter, the game will be decided by sudden death, unless it is the first place game, which will continue with overtime until a winner is decided.
- Half time intermission will be three minutes in length. Officials have the authority to shorten the intermission period in order to keep games on schedule.
- There will be three time outs per game. All time outs will be one minute in duration. Each team will also have one time out per overtime. Unused time outs do not carry forward into overtime.
- The alternate possession rule will be used in all jump ball situations, with the exceptions of the beginning of the game and the beginning of each overtime period.
- Grade Specific Rules:
- 4th Grade Only:
- Youth (27.5 in) basketballs will be used
- Free Throws Shot at 12 feet (An additional 12-foot line will be designated on the court).
- NO ZONE. Person-to-person defense only, no zone or trapping.
- No full-court press of any kind. FIRST VIOLATION RESULTS IN A WARNING. SECOND VIOLATION AND ALL SUBSEQUENT VIOLATIONS RESULT IN A TECHNICAL FOUL.
- 5th Grade Only:
- NO ZONE. Person-to-person defense only.
- Full-court press is permitted, but only person-to-person defense
- A team leading by 20 or more points may not use a full court press. FIRST VIOLATION RESULTS IN A WARNING. SECOND VIOLATION AND ALL SUBSEQUENT VIOLATIONS RESULT IN A TECHNICAL FOUL.
- 6TH – 8TH GradeS Only:
- All defenses are allowed, except that a team leading by 20 or more points may not use a full court press. FIRST VIOLATION RESULTS IN A WARNING. SECOND VIOLATION AND ALL SUBSEQUENT VIOLATIONS RESULT IN A TECHNICAL FOUL.
- Bonus one-and-one free throws on the 7th foul in each half. Two shot bonus on the 10th foul of each half.
- Players will foul out after their fifth personal foul. If a team has only five players left in the game, no player shall foul out of the game after their fifth foul. Any subsequent fouls on that player will result in the fouled team be awarded a technical foul (no shot) plus the ball out of bounds in addition the regular foul shots.
- Three point shots will be counted only where there is a three-point line on the gym floor.
- Technical fouls are an automatic two points, plus the possession of the ball.
- All forfeits will be scored 15-0
- In pool brackets, the top teams will be determined as follows:
- a. If two teams are tied:
- i. In any situation where two teams are tied, head-to-head competition between the teams shall determine the winner.
- b. If three or more teams are tied:
- i. Step One: If more than two teams are tied, a point differential tie breaker will be applied. The point differentials of the teams involved in the tie are totaled. Teams are then ranked according to the sum of the point differential and the team with the highest ranking is determined the pool play winner. (15 points is the maximum plus or minus total that will be factored into the point differential calculation.) NOTE: Once the pool winner has been determined via the point differential, the tie between the remaining two teams shall be broken based on head-to-head competition.
- ii. Step Two: If more than two teams are still tied after Step One, the point differentials of the teams not involved in the tie are added and the results recalculated.
- iii. Step Three: If more than two teams are still tied after Step Two, a three-way flip of the coin shall break the tie, with the odd team being declared the pool winner. The tie between the two remaining teams shall be broken based on the results of their head-to-head competition
- No protests will be allowed.
- Coaches are responsible for their actions plus the action of their players and fans. Inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated. The decisions of the official will be final and they have the authority to forfeit games if necessary. In addition, any players, coach or fan thrown out of a game will be removed from the tournament.
